Applying for Passports in Bangladesh

A Bangladeshi passport is the most basic travel document a Bangladesh national needs to travel to other countries. The Bangladesh government issues passports only to its citizens. When applying for one, remember to give only correct information as the issuance of the passport can be denied should falsification be suspected.

The government issues passports on four grounds:

  • Your passport has completed or is near to completing ten years of being issued.
  • Your passport pages have been exhausted or is about to be exhausted.
  • Your passport has been damaged.
  • Your passport has been destroyed, lost or stolen.

Types Available

You can enter the country with different types of Bangladeshi passports, which include the regular or tourist passport type, the official passport type, and the diplomatic passport type.

The most common type of passport is the regular or tourist type. This is issued for vacation travel or business trips. Another is the official passport type that government officials and other representatives must apply for if they will be traveling to Bangladesh on a government mission. The third type is the diplomatic passport, issued to members of the diplomatic communities and their staff.

Requirements

If you are applying for a new Bangladesh passport, the first thing you must complete is the application form. You will also need four passport-size photographs, one with the proper seal from a professional person who has duly attested to it. In the case of a child, an endorsement of the child’s name in his or her mother’s passport is needed.

If you are renewing your passport, you will also need the application form, two passport-size photographs, a prepaid self-addressed registered envelope and return courier, as well as a fee.

If your passport was lost, aside from the application form and duly attested photographs, you will also need to submit a police report, photocopy of the lost passport, birth certificate, residency certificate with utility bills, or tenancy agreement.

Additional Information

If you are traveling around the country, you will also need your passport as an identification document. For example, if you are stopped by a law enforcement officer, you have to present this, along with your international driver’s license.
