Applying for Passports in Cambodia

You are always asked for this travel document when entering or leaving the airport. Being one of the most important and basic requirements when traveling abroad, the passport also serves as an identification document.

Types Available

Currently, Cambodian embassies and consulates, along with its Ministry of Interior, issue three passport types: ordinary, official, and diplomatic.

The ordinary passport is also called the tourist passport and is issued to most citizens. You may present this when traveling for purposes of tourism, studying, visitation, and work. Usually, before you can travel abroad, you must have at least six months validity left.

The official passport is for government employees who are traveling for work-related matters, as well as for their accompanying dependents; the diplomatic passport is for diplomats, consults, and their staff that will travel for missions abroad. A diplomatic passport does not, however, mean a visa-free travel. The holder still must apply for a diplomatic visa.

Requirements

An important source of information about passport application is the country’s Ministry of Interior website. This is the government branch that issues passports to its citizens. To obtain one, you will need to submit the passport application form with recent passport-size photographs. Just remember to provide complete and correct information on the form.

Another important document is the proof of your Cambodian nationality, like your birth certificate, plus any proof of your identity such as government Id or driver’s license. The processing and the passport itself will also cost you a fee.

Your passport is your primary identification document while traveling abroad; if you lose or misplace it, report this immediately to your country’s embassy or consulate.

Also always take with you another form of identification such as any form of ID, your birth certificate, and driver’s license. It is also wise to have some photocopies of your travel documents in case the original ones are lost or stolen.
