Welcoming the South Korean Wave

With the trend of “Hallyu” or the Korean wave, people are becoming very interested in Korean culture, movies, and language. Nothing can be as inviting as the good-looking actors and actresses, along with the tourist attractions of each province.

Where to Go

Tourism in South Korea has expectedly bloomed, which is referred to as the Hallyu effect. In 2006, more than six million foreigners visited South Korea. Many of them come from neighboring countries like China and Japan, along with tourists from Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The country has many places that you can explore. Transportation is convenient, as you can ride the subway in Seoul, the capital city, as well as in other major cities. If you plan to go to provinces, try the bullet train KTX.

Seoul: Every year, many South Koreans try their luck in Seoul, as most job opportunities are located in this city. In addition, several tourist spots are located here. If you like to visit historical spots, you can go to Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung alace, and Deoksugung Palace, where early dynasties were based.

Of course, you shouldn’t forget souvenirs and unique Korean items. You can get them in Insadong, the center of souvenir shops. For shopping, explore Myeongdong for high-end products, and Namdaemun and Dongdaemun for bargains.

If you’re on a tight budget, don’t worry. Enjoy the Han River for free. Explore its park, bridge, and the amazing bright lights at night. It is romantic, too.

Busan: This is the ultimate beach house. Busan is the main port of S. Korea for international cargo and is also the host city of an annual film festival. You can enjoy the waters of Busan in Haeundae Beach, Gwangalli Beach, and more, along with Taejong-dae Park.

Gyeongju: This region stands as a very important witness to South Korean history. Located here are the Bulguksa Temple, Gameunsa Temple Site, and Bunhwangsa Temple.

What to Do

You can sightsee. South Korea houses many museums and parks where you can stay whole days. You can also visit the shooting locations of many Korean TV series such as Suwon, where the series “Dae Jang Geum” was shot; Jeju Island, where “Full House” was shot; and many more.

You can eat and drink merrily. South Korea has its own unique culinary flavor, which is very different from neighboring countries like Japan and China. They are known for healthy and natural food. One of their most famous dishes is Kimchi. This refers to the fermented cabbage that was said to be the secret of Koreans why they were spared from the SARS virus back in 2003. Other healthy dishes include bibimbap or mixed rice and vegetables, naengmyun or cold and sour noodles, soju or the distilled rice liquor that is 10% to 25% alcohol. “Panchan” or side dishes are also part of any meal.

You can shop until you drop too. Korean fashion is known for being very stylish. There are many clothing stores in Seoul, most of which are branded and high end. However, there are also flea markets like Namdaemun and Dongdaemun for cheaper items.

What to remember

One thing you should know of this country is their respectful culture. Remember to use the sentence ending “yo” when talking with people, especially those you do not know. The informal form is only used with friends and with younger people.

Inside the bus, offer your seat to elders as this is very important in this country. Inside the subway, seats alloted to those pregnant, elderly and disabled should be left vacant for them.
