Vietnamese Passports

Every Vietnamese citizen is entitled to have a Vietnamese passport for the purpose of international travel provided that he or she complies with all the requirements. It is also proof of Vietnamese citizenship or nationality. Functioning as the country’s central passport organization, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issues Vietnamese passports to all eligible Vietnamese nationals. If you wish to obtain a passport, you may apply at any of the passport offices throughout the country. If you’re living abroad, you may apply at any of the Vietnamese diplomatic missions (consulates and embassies) overseas.

Types Available

There are two major types of Vietnamese passports. Choose the one appropriate for you depending on your purpose or position.

  • Ordinary passport. Every Vietnamese national has the right to own an ordinary passport to travel outside the country. This type is issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hanoi or any of its offices across the country. Vietnamese citizens abroad can obtain one from any Vietnamese consular missions in your country of residence.
  • Diplomatic or official passport. Diplomatic or official passports are issued to accredited members of any diplomatic missions, high-ranking government officials, employees or members of international organizations (United Nations, Organization of American States, etc), and their family members on their official visits or missions abroad. They are usually exempted from fees. Only the Ministry of Foreign Affairs can issue this type of passport. However, consulates can extend the validity of diplomatic passports for Vietnamese citizens living abroad carrying this type.

How to apply

The first thing you will need when applying for a Vietnamese passport is an application form. You may obtain this from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or any passport office throughout the country. If you’re living abroad, you may get a copy from the consular section of any Vietnamese embassy or consulate. Fill out the form fully, legibly and accurately. Write in capital letters. Any misrepresentation or suppression of the facts may lead to denial of passport. Incomplete and incorrect applications will not be processed.

Aside from the application form, here are the other documents you are required to submit:

  • birth certificate
  • recent passport-style photographs
  • proofs of citizenship
  • certificated of identity
  • self-addressed envelope (stamped)

An application for a Vietnamese passport also requires payment of fees. To get further details, contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the consular section of any Vietnamese consulate or embassy in your area.
